What is latency?

The click happens now. The response has a journey.

Latency is the delay in communication between two network points. It helps explain waiting for a response, but is not the same as total page load time.

A request makes a round trip.

The diagram explains the path; it does not measure your connection.

Waiting can have more than one cause.

Choose what you notice to distinguish network delay, data volume and website processing.

The first response involves the path and the server.

Distance, routing and website processing can affect the first response. That time is not a pure measure of network latency.

Latency

It is communication delay. Consider the measurement method and path when comparing.

Bandwidth

It is the capacity to transfer data over time. More capacity does not automatically remove latency.

Page loading

It includes the network, server, files and the browser’s work to display the page.

What to know before you choose.

Are ping and page load time the same?

No. A network round-trip test does not necessarily include all the work needed to load a page.

Will a faster internet plan fix everything?

More capacity can help transfers, but delay, routing, Wi-Fi and the website also affect the experience.

How can I assess my website?

Test the real page, note location and conditions, and compare after changing one thing at a time.
